In a lot of books I've read, they've said to determine what your goals are for homeschooling. Why do you want to homeschool? Why homeschool and not some other method of education?
Part of this is so you can explain it to others (especially family members) when asked. But another reason is so when times get to be rough you can look at your goals and focus on your goals.
My main goal for wanting to homeschool is so my kids get the opportunity to maximize their learning potential. I want them to know how to learn and enjoy learning.
On 20/20 last night they were talking about myths and lies. One of the myths on their list was "Outsourcing is Bad". On 20/20 they said that outsourcing wasn't bad, because it lowers prices for products and services. However, outsourcing does make people lose jobs and I think people losing their jobs is bad thing.
Even though I think losing a job is a bad thing sometimes it is necessary. Even in nature things we perceive as being bad are necessary. Forest fires, for example, help to rejuvenate an area. Losing jobs should help people to rejuvenate their careers.
Change is scary for anyone. If you don't agree, try to implement a new procedure in a manufacturing company or add a computer system to a process where an operator has never used a computer before.
If people new how to learn and enjoyed learning I don't think change would be as scary to an individual.
People should be looking at public schools in this light, because the generation in public schools right now will be facing even more change than we are right now. If they don't know how to learn and enjoy learning then our country really is in trouble.
Change in the Future
Public schools do adapt to changes. There is a lot more technology in the classroom. This allows children to learn how to change with technology.
Children learn to adapt to changes every year in elementary schools and every class in middle and high school.
If change is hard for people it's because they get to use to the same thing day after day.
The response
I think that everyone learns to deal with change. It how they respond to change that is important. If a child is in public school and they dread going back to school their response is negative. However, if they want to go back to school their response is positive.
I think people should figure out how to get positive responses.
Current Rut
Day to day routine also keeps parents from making a change in how their child is taught to learn, because the current public system keeps saying that this is the way school should be done.
Re: Change in the Future
I'll agree that people who get stuck in day to day routine have difficulty with change.
What I don't understand is why people don't pursue change or why people just settle for what is being done or what has been. Everyone talks about problems and it's like that commercial where everyone stands around talking about the liter on the ground and no one picks it up, but another person who doesn't talk about it just picks it up and throws it away.
I see public schools doing something similar...there are a lot of people talking about problems in public school...there is a lot of discussion of what can be done...but very little is being done. Why? Are people content with settling for how everything has been done? Why are they content?
I see homeschooling as acting on a problem (a solution to a problem) where other people just complain about it.
Public Information
I saw that 20/20 program. I think half the beliefs spread in the media and through political circles are garbage. I don't think anyone really understands what will make this world better, because all they are concerned about is money.
Re: The Future and Goals for Homeschooling
I agree with you on how outsourcing is not bad, but requires people to make a change in their lives.
I think my kids will be ready for any changes that come about. We've travelled to India and have met different people that work for companies that are from America (like Hewlett Packard). These people need jobs just like everyone else. They are adapting and learning what they need to to fulfill the need.
